Both Cleburne County and the town of Ranburne have signed proclamations recognizing April as Confederate History and Heritage Month.

The proclamation recognizes the burdens of war suffered by residents of Alabama during the Civil War and particularly those from Cleburne County who served in the ranks of 3rd Ala. Cavalry, Co G.; 22nd Ala. Co. G; 44th Ala. Co I & K and 48th Ala., Co. I & K.

It also recognizes the efforts to reunite and rebuild and that slavery was one of the causes of the war and is condemned.

Cleburne County also recognizes its namesake, Gen. Patrick Cleburne who served at Chickamauga and Ringold Gap, GA.

He had ties to Alabama. He was the best man at General William Hardee's wedding in Demopolis and his own fiance', Ms. Sue Tarleton, came from Mobile. Cleburne also commanded numerous Eastern Alabama units.

Clebume County Commission Ex -Officio Chairman Ryan Robertson along with Cleburne County Commissioner Tracy Lambert recently presented Georgia historian Billy Bearden a copy of the Cleburne County flag which is similar to the battle flag of Gen. cleburne.

During the presentation, Bearden noted that Gen. William Hardee designed the flag, Gen. Cleburne and his men bestowed great leadership behind it and the members of the Cleburne County Commission, particularly Robertson, adopted it.

Bearden thanked Brian O'Mahony of Cork City, County Cork, Ireland (birthplace of Gen. Clebume, for his research as well as Ms. Janet Baber of Edwardsville for promotion of the flag idea. He said Steve Scroggins of Macon, GA brought the original idea together on a computer and Richard Boarts of Bremen, GA donated the flag used in the original design while Dustin Compton of Carrollton, GA hand-painted the artwork.

Bearden also recognized Willie Rice for his support locally and the efforts of the Villa Rica, GA based Sons of Confederate Veterans Forrest's Escort Camp 1239 for their participation in helping Clebume Day become a huge success.
