Lee/Jackson Dinner
Friday January 27, 2006
Hosted by the Lt. James T. Woodward Camp 1399 [See photos below]
SCV Camp 1399 and proud Southerners from across central Georgia gathered together January 27 to honor
the memory and heroism of two Southern icons, Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. Jackson. Noted Southern author Walter
D. "Donnie" Kennedy was billed as the featured speaker, which helped to bring out a good crowd of about sixty to the historic New Perry Hotel in Perry.
In addition to Camp 1399 members, we were joined by members of the Pine Barrens Camp 2039 from Eastman, the Clinch's
Cavalry Camp 2084 from Jeffersonville, and Camp Logan E. Bleckley Camp 1998 in Cochran. Members of the Sidney Lanier Chapter of
the UDC and the Bibb Chapter of the League of the South were also present.
Mr. Kennedy had a number of his books on hand for purchase and he personlized them for purchasers.
The Camp purchased four books and offered those as door prizes along with several DVDs and other
prizes. When Mrs. Kennedy won a DVD prize (Gods and Generals), Donnie remarked, "Thank goodness she didn't win one of those old books."
The duo "Playing Possum" provided the musical entertainment before and during dinner. Mr. Kennedy's message was well-received by all. He contrasted what is now generally accepted
as a "hero" with REAL heros like Lee and Jackson. He discussed the attributes that define a hero and illustrated how
Lee and Jackson demostrated those attributes. He said that "the South was Right in 1861 because America was right in 1776."
Like the Founders, those Southern heroes who stood up for their God-given right to self-government, that is, government that
derives is just powers from the Consent of the Governed---THEY were heroes. We owe it to our ancestors and our descendants to win back those
freedoms that are slowly being forfeited to unlimited government.
Good food, good music, and good company gathered to honor Southern heroes. With a great speaker like Donnie Kennedy, it was an
enjoyable evening for everyone.
