Maybe the Tide is Turning? – by Randy Young
"There is not a truth existing which I fear... or would wish unknown to the whole world." - Thomas Jefferson
"Surrender means that the history of this heroic struggle will be written by the enemy; that our youth will be trained by Northern school
teachers; will learn from Northern school books their version of the War; will be impressed by all the influences of history and to regard our
gallant dead as traitors, and our maimed veterans as fit subjects for derision." --General Patrick Cleburne, CSA
"The cultists....ignore actual American history, fabricate a false history, or dabble in semantics and word games in order to portray The Great
Centralizer as a god-like figure. They routinely refer to him as "Father Abraham" and compare him to Jesus or Moses. They do this because their
agenda is not only the deification of Lincoln, but of executive
power and nationalism in general."
--Thomas J. DiLorenzo,
Lincoln UnMasked
Anyone who has shared time with me on these pages in the past knows that I am a staunch defender of a clear
picture of truth in regard to the South. Basically, I believe the last 150 years of American history is not all it has been made out
to be in our history books. I have preached long and hard about all the misinformation and propaganda that is out there in regard to who
and what we are, and also, in regard to our overall history.
It has been my contention that if we are going to call something a worm based on what is found under a few rocks, perhaps other things might
be called worms as well if a few more rocks were overturned.
Well, maybe, just maybe, those unturned rocks are finally revealing their dirty underside, and to be sure, some will
not like what is to be seen.
Last year, I was generally lambasted for having the "audacity," as some put it, to challenge the saintly persona
surrounding Abraham Lincoln here. While
some have heard "the
rest of the story" in regard to our 16th president, it was obvious based on the
reaction to my column about him that many more have not - and even when they do, some refuse to listen.
Lo and behold, what comes along recently but a three-hour documentary on the History Channel, no less, dedicated
to finally telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth in regard to the ol' railsplitter. And what did the
History Channel
find out? A few tidbits:
- Lincoln suffered two nervous breakdowns--so severe that both times his friends mounted suicide watches.
- Even in the White House, Lincoln frequently spoke of his fear that he might commit suicide
- Lincoln’s second nervous breakdown came after he had abruptly broken his engagement to Mary Todd, whom he later married. Historians are
divided about the reasons for the breaking of the engagement, citing homosexuality, another woman and syphilis.
- Lincoln shared a bed with his intimate friend Joshua Speed for four years, and wrote a series of letters which seem like love letters to him.
New evidence has recently emerged in the form of eyewitness accounts that suggest Lincoln, during his presidency, had a continuing homosexual
relationship with a Captain of his Guard.
- Lincoln had a history of visiting prostitutes before his marriage, and he was convinced throughout his life he had caught syphilis from one in 1832.
- As a rising politician in Illinois, Lincoln developed a reputation for dirty tricks, for writing libelous anonymous letters (he was even
challenged to a duel for one), and for the ruthless demolition of his opponents.
- Lincoln was not a practicing Christian in any way, and as a young man he published a book about his reluctance to accept the Jesus story.
Though he increasingly invoked the concept of the divine in his later writings and speeches, he never referred to Jesus or made claims for the
Lord’s will.
There is much, much more, but let's just suffice it to say I was stunned this program ever saw the light of day, much
less was featured by the best known and most respected of sources.
Then, as if that weren't enough, the same network aired a stunning documentary called
"80 Acres of Hell," about
Camp Douglas, the Union prisoner of war
camp in Chicago, Illinois. Although our nation is well-versed about the atrocities committed against
Union POWs at Andersonville, few have heard of the wholesale annihilation of Confederate prisoners at Camp Douglas. Thousands of Southerners -
white and black, including more than a few good men from right here in Thomas County - died there, and the site of the compound still today
holds the largest mass grave in the western
hemisphere, and yet nearly no one knows of its existence.
"To the victor belongs the silence," perhaps? Maybe so, but the silence has been finally and thunderously broken
with this damning documentary.
Some tidbits from the program? The death rate in Union POW camps was higher than that in Southern camps - even
though Union officials had near unlimited access to food, medicine, and doctors. Unlike Andersonville, Camp Douglas had the resources necessary
to house and care for its prisoners, but calculated cruelty, torture, and neglect by the U.S. military conspired to exterminate Southern
soldiers who entered this "80 Acres of Hell," where my own great-great grandfather was held for six months from late 1864 to early 1865.
But, Southern prisoners were not the only victims. Under martial law, prominent Chicago citizens were unjustly
tried and imprisoned by a ruthless military tribunal. From 1862 to 1866, more than 6,000 prisoners and scores of civilians died at the hands
of a corrupt and murderous system with tentacles to the Lincoln White House.
These aren't my words, mind you. Everything you are reading here today is entirely from the History Channel. The
programs are all available on DVD, and hopefully will be
aired again.
Like I said before, maybe the tide is turning in regard to some unspoken truths seeing the light of day. All I
can say is, on behalf of mine and many of your ancestors, it's about time.
