Dirt Roads Scholar: Voting Rights, Corruption & Media bias – Commentary by Michael Kilpatrick
The following were letters to the editors of The Macon Telegraph.
Voting Rights
Editors: It's an outrage! The requirement of a photo ID to vote is a communist
Nazi storm comrade tactic! It says in the Constitution, or some other really important paper, that we should be able to
vote any way we want to! We should be able to phone our vote in, or write it on a napkin at Waffle House and drop it
in a box somewhere to be picked up. We should be able to casually mention our favorite candidate on
the street corner, and if they don't win we can call in to complain and get the election overturned.
My favorite though, is having the candidates give us money to vote for them.
The one giving away the most money wins! That's fair, isn't it? And isn't that another one of our rights that's in some
dusty old documents, too?
Third World Corruption
Editors: It would be enlightening for an investigative reporter to track down
just how much money has been flushed down the African rat hole since colonialism ended. That number could be
contrasted with any measurable positive effects the money may have had. Perhaps an estimation of how much of it was
used to buy arms to slaughter whoever's' turn it was to be slaughtered at the time, and how much went into the Swiss
bank accounts of such African luminaries as Idi Amin Dada, Kofi Annan, or Robert Mugabe, would be enlightening as well.
"Britain's Royal African Society claims that in the past fifty years Africa has received a trillion dollars in aid, ten
times the aid sent to Europe after World War II. Nonetheless, more Africans live in deeper poverty today than when the
aid began to flow.
Recently it was revealed that corrupt Nigerian officials pocketed 200 billion Pounds in bribes over the past few years.
How much the other corrupt officials throughout the continent have accounted for can only be imagined." ---R. Emmett Tyrell Jr.
I don't pretend to know what the answer is for the barbarism, murder, disease,
and despair that has been the normal state of affairs on that continent for as long as history has been written, but in
the modern world, Christianity, free markets, and representative government seem to have gained the envy, and ire, of
much the globe, wherever those ideals flowered.
While at the same time areas of the globe that exhibit most of Africa's
characteristics are havens for terrorists.
Some things demonstrably work - others only work in the fevered dreams of
utopians and despots, and leave a legacy destined only for the dustbin of history, with misery, mass graves and
destruction as their only fruit.
Media bias
Editors: Now, I know the media isn't really biased. I know this because the
media keeps telling me so. But I could sure use another reassurance. We have this latest confusion I could use some
help on, over Cindy Sheehan, grieving anti-war mom, and Pat Robertson, televangalist.
Here's what the TV preacher said:
"We don't need another $200 billion war to
get rid of one ... strong-arm dictator. It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and
then get it over with."
Now here's some quotes from Mrs. Sheehan:
“They’re not waging a war on
terror, but a war of terror. The biggest terrorist is George W. Bush. The only reason Bush wants to stay there is
because his buddies are getting rich and feasting off the blood of our children. You tell me my son died to spread the
cancer of Pax Americana. America has been killing people on this continent since it was started. This country is not
worth dying for.”
I've seen and heard Robertson's quote everywhere, including editorials in
this paper. Sheehan's quotes are found almost exclusively on the Internet. I await with aborted breath for Ms.
Sheehan's statements to receive some unbiased attention from our objective media.
