A Confederate History Minute (29) – by Calvin E. Johnson, Jr.
The Stone Mountain Confederate Memorial Carving
Many people come to Stone Mountain Park, near Atlanta, Georgia, to see the world famous Confederate Memorial carving of Confederate President Jefferson Davis,
Gen. Robert E. Lee and Gen. Thomas Jonathan (Stonewall) Jackson on horseback. The carving was officially dedicated in 1970.
In 1984, I joined my family and friends there for the Laser Show that included the song "Dixie" by the late Elvis Presley and ended in what looked like our
Confederate Heroes, Lee, Jackson and Davis, galloping off the mountain.
It was in front of the Confederate Memorial Carving that "Confederate Memorial Plaza" was dedicated on Sunday, the twenty third day of April, in the year
of our Lord nineteen hundred and seventy eight at two in the afternoon.
I am told there was also a roll call of the Confederate States and what sounded like ghostly responses of Confederate soldiers of each of the Southern
States of the War Between the States-1861-1865.
The principal adrress was given by Governor George Busbee.
Let's not forget our noble Confederate ancestors!
