A Confederate History Minute (27) – by Calvin E. Johnson, Jr.
The World's Largest Confederate Memorial
The largest Confederate Memorial has to be the Jefferson Davis Memorial Highway named for Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
The highway runs from Washington, D.C. to the Washington State and Canada border.
The highway begins from Washington D.C. going down South on US 1 and US 15 to Augusta, Georgia. From Augusta it runs two routes to
Montgomery, Alabama. The Northern route goes West on highway 278 to Atlanta, Georgia, then down US 29 to US 80. The Southern route
heads South on US 319 to Tifton, Georgia and then on US 82.
From Montgomery, the highways continues on US 314 to Mobile, Alabama, then on US 80 to San Diego, California. From there it heads
North on US 101 to San Francisco and lastly through Oregon and Washington State. The Jefferson Davis Highway has two spurs: from New
Orleans North to Bowling Green, Kentucky and a wye from Houston and San Antonio South to Brownsville.
In total the Jefferson Davis Memorial Day passes through 173 Counties in 13 states and a distance of 3,417 miles.
In 1929 a boulder was placed on the highway where it passes "Beauvoir" the last home of Jefferson Davis.
