WHAT WILL YOU SAY?
What will you say when they’ve had their way and you know your end is near?
What will you do when everyone who ever knew is gone, your friends and those you held dear?
When you are the last of your kind, and the only one to know the truth,
will you try to keep the Charge alive and educate the youth?
What will you tell your grandchildren when they rummage through your drawer,
and find an old, dusty book about an unknown war,
that they never heard about in their school with teachers from every corner of the earth,
that know and care nothing of our brave ancestors who fought and died for something of great worth.
What will you say when they climb in your lap and look you in the eye,
and say Grandpa, why did they have to die?
When they see a picture of the glorious Battle Flag for the first time in their life,
and you look over your shoulder nervously to see where the government camera is aimed,
will you try to tell them why it’s not in books, nor in museums; will you be able to explain?
What will you do when their mother screams in a strange sounding tongue,
takes the old book from their hands and tells them they can’t come
to see their grandpa anymore; he’s a crazy, sick old man,
who shouldn’t be showing children such things that they can’t understand.
What will you tell your son who visits you and starts to rave,
and scolds you for upsetting the children and his wife with your book that has the word “slave”?
What will you do when he takes your cherished SCV award,
the one you got back in 2010 for serving on the board?
It features the Battle Flag like our logo does today,
but in the year 2018 it was banned and removed from all display.
And when your end is finally here and they lay you in your grave,
what will you tell your ancestors that ask why you refused to save
the memory of their valor, courage, and struggle against a ruthless foe,
who took the ideals of our Founding Fathers and dealt them a lethal blow.
Will you be able to look up at them and give the pitiful line,
that you and the others quit long ago ‘cause you just didn’t have the time?
What will you say?
