PERDUE'S BUDGET WILL RAISE PROPERTY TAXES – Commentary by Woody Highsmith
State School Superintendent Kathy Cox said the options for local districts include
using reserves, raising property taxes and slashing programs. House Appropriations Committee member and former
chairman of the Education Committee Rep. Jeanette Jamieson (D-Toccoa), said "The tax increases last year
are going to be nothing compared to what they are going to have in the coming year."
Executive director of the Georgia School Superintendents Association
Herb Garrett said the Governor's Budget proposal "means higher taxes."
Rural school districts will be the hardest hit. The 2% pay raise for
teachers, 5% for the more than half because of the longevity raises will strain local systems and may even force
layoffs.
Pinnochio Perdue will not raise taxes but his Budget will make property
taxes go up, cut school programs and cut teaching positions.
Thanks, Sonny.
