Wither the SPLC – Commentary by Greg Hanson
Once again the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC)has
raised its ugly head. This time it was in connection
with the Henry County League of the South’s Ten
Commandments Rally held on August 7, 2004.
It was the
Henry County Times' turn to follow the usual script
laid down by publishers and editors whenever the
League of the South or any other Southern organization
is mentioned. The SPLC’s response was its standard
“racist” boilerplate. Yawn, stretch, ho hum, what
else is new? Mark Potok may want to consider just
putting it on a CD, thus saving his annoying voice.
What the Henry County Times failed to mention was that
the SPLC was a plaintiff in the Justice Roy Moore Ten
Commandments monument case in Alabama. Hardly an
objective observer.
Now why do you suppose that the SPLC has jumped into
the war to eradicate Christian symbols?
My guess is that donations even from the dedicated
leftists in New York and Hollywood, and the blue
haired grannies in Miami Beach were petering out.
Even they must be tiring of the SPLC’s “hate crime”
bulletins detailing its latest survey of bathroom
graffiti, Constitutionally protected literature
distributions, name calling incidents, and
self-serving hoaxes.

These dedicated leftists were
probably demanding some real action for their buck.
As we all know, tearing down Christian symbols is ever
popular with the dedicated leftists, so the SPLC
decided that was going to be its latest foray into the
war on Western civilization.
However, that area is
already quite crowded with the American Civil
Liberties Union, the Anti-Defamation League, the
Center for Democratic Renewal, and a virtual mound of
cultural termites already leading the charge. The
SPLC is in danger of being seen as a Karl-Marx-come-lately, despite its sterling anti-white,
anti-Christian, and anti-Western credentials.
The success gained by the Henry County League of the
South in presenting the Ten Commandments in the first
place, and its successful rally indicates the
declining fortunes of leftist hate spewed by the SPLC
and others. The fact that the mayor of McDonough and
a Barrow County Commissioner attended and spoke at the
rally, and other elected officials sent their support
is a good indication of improving fortunes of the
Southern movement.
Matter of fact, this is just the latest example of
elected officials recognizing the growing power of the
Southern movement. There are indeed many others who
recognize this increasing power but who will try to ignore
it as long as they can, believe me.
What of the SPLC, its leftist allies, including the
media? Are they in fact losing their punch, and their
ability to scare people with their tired accusations?
I think so. Sure, the SPLC still has its $125 million
safely stashed away, and is still the darling of the
media, but fewer and fewer people are buying what it
and the others are selling.
My hat is off to Ray McBerry and the Henry County
League of the South for their actions in donating the
Ten Commandments marker, and for holding the rally. Their
plans to present 20 more counties with the Ten
Commandments serves to turn up the heat on the enemy.
They have proven, once again, the value of small unit
operations, and demonstrate just how effective they
can be.
Remember, get active if you’re not already, stay
active if you are, do what you can, give what you can,
and together we can win. We are, in fact, on a roll,
and we all need to be pushing as hard as we can right
now.
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful
committed citizens can change the world, indeed it is
the only thing that ever has."
