In a sudden turn toward rehabilitation, the governor is quoted by his press secretary as flipping and flopping and suggesting the decision on the new tag should be left to a polling of the citizens.

True to form he has resorted to another phony referendum such as the one he foisted on the voters on the state flag. You remember, the one everyone but about 20% of the voters ignored mainly because it was no choice at all when he selectively eliminated the 1956 flag which he had promised to include in the choice of the people.

The license tag poll is fraught with even more opportunity for voter fraud. He proposes conducting it by Internet. Anyone familiar with Internet polls knows how they can be manipulated by any side of the question.

Nonetheless, I believe we should take him up on his offer and submit a tag design or two or our own. In this regard, Billy Bearden came up with a good idea. I won't reveal the details, since that is Billy's option, particularly since his plan would represent a surreptitious surprise.

Sonny is showing signs of desperation in a campaign that he can't seem to get above the mid forties in polling. With more moves like this tag fiasco to remind the voters of his duplicity with the flag, he could fall below the magic electoral number of 45%.

The Hoof In Mouth problem doesn't end there. Every week the symptoms seem to reappear in another form or fashion. Case in point is his answer given during a talk show when he was asked how others could gain a $100,000 tax break, and he responded, "Get yourself elected governor."

It seems he alone is keeping Mark Taylor in a competitive striking distance in the race for governor. Meanwhile the Libertarian candidate, Mike Hayes, continues to gain ground and could be a factor in no one getting to the 45% level.

Good campaign advice would be to let this auto license tag issue be pushed far to the background. But can that happen if a vocal electorate urges a poll, as promised? If Perdue won't permit a poll, even though he suggested it, just like the flag, we the people should conduct a poll and put it on as many websites as possible.

Who knows, developing good solid activist citizens at the grassroots may develop a future Georgia gubernatorial star that is qualified for his own $100,000 tax break.
