More Lincoln Myths Exposed by J. A. Davis
"You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free." --John 8:32
Have you noticed how the Lincoln lobby has stepped up efforts to
promote the Lincoln legend lately?
Finally, in the last few years with the internet and folks like Thomas
Di Lorenzo (The Real Lincoln) among others bringing
out documented historical truth, Saint Abraham's halo has lost some
luster.
We should have expected a counter attack.
Recently I had several phone calls from folks who were astonished at
what they heard on a local radio station, WDUN, in
Gainesville.
Here's what they heard, reportedly from Joel Williams on a morning
show. Joel reported a pastor in his church announced as fact the following
which I will paraphrase, I hope accurately.
Lincoln was a compassionate man. When Richmond was evacuated and
occupied by the union army, Lincoln went to Richmond, unescorted by the
military and decided to call on president Davis at the
Confederate White House to express his
compassion and understanding and to extend his friendship and
willingness to work toward the rebuilding of the nation.
He knocked on the door and found President Davis was out, but Mrs.
Davis and the children were there.
He asked to meet with them and as the report goes it was a very
gracious meeting in which Mr. Lincoln held the children and either kissed or was
kissed on the cheek by them.
Makes a nice story to spread propaganda
to those who don't know better.
Let's look at the facts:
Varina Davis and the Davis children had departed Richmond several days
earlier and were in Greensboro, North Carolina.
President Davis was enroute to Danville,
Virginia with several members of the CSA
Cabinet.
No mention was made of one of the children, Jim Limber, the black boy
the Davis family adopted who lived with them
in the White House and who was with Varina and the other children in
Greensboro.
Abraham Lincoln did visit Richmond. He saw a city considerably
destroyed by fires and looting initiated by Union troops. Part of the
city, including the capitol and the White House remained unharmed,
under heavy guard.
Lincoln had with him his son Todd. They did visit the Confederate
White House, under a heavy guard detachment of soldiers. Lincoln sat at the
desk of President Davis. He met with no one from the Confederate
government, though he did meet with some Richmond officials and citizens.
Now I ask you....Why would this story be
circulated? What good purpose does it serve? What is wrong with the
truth? Doesn't it serve a better purpose?
Isn't it interesting that we Southerners are
satisfied to live with the truth without embellishment while having to
reserve efforts to shoot down the fantasies of those who distort the
real truth to serve a selfish politically correct agenda.
Not to be without compassion, I want to make plain that I don't believe
for one second that Joel Williams did this with malice aforethought. I
think he, like his minister have been caught in a trap they
had no idea is part of a campaign to herald Lincoln as a great American
while the real history is proving he was the beginning of the death of
our Republic. Further, he rebuked several efforts to either prevent or end a war that
killed 620,000 Americans, more than all our wars combined. Where is the
compassion?
Joel is too good a broadcaster not to check out stories before he
reports them. I'm surprised to know this happened.
WDUN is part of a three station monopoly
in Gainesville. One wonders how their owners are able to have approval
for three stations with no competition.
Confederate descendants who make up a major part of their audience are
not the only segments in Northeast Georgia's population to note the
difference no competition makes.
Recently a commander of a SCV camp
commented about how well the monopoly
covered U. S. soldiers and veterans, that is except certified U. S.
Veterans who happened to serve the Confederacy.
This station, to my knowledge, has never offered anyone associated with
a heritage organization equal time, outside of an occasional call to a talk show.
I doubt you'll hear it on WDUN, but let's
just review a few of more than a hundred of Saint Abraham's "acts of
compassion":
- Developed and approved the war against civilians and non belligerents, including the burning and destruction
of the property of Georgians, white and black, from Atlanta to the sea.
(Read Sherman's Memoirs)
- Then there's the burning of Jackson and the total destruction
of the Shenandoah Valley. (Read The Slave Narratives on the GHC website and note how black folks were left
homeless with no food or place to go in their own words.)
- Approved and showed his approval of
the torture of Confederate prisoners and the murder of at least 6,000
at Camp Douglas, Illinois, by promoting the warden to General. (The
History Channel reports his amusement at hearing of the various methods of torture and slow
death) You might ask yourself why you don't hear more about the most
atrocious prison in U. S. history?
- After issuing unlawful orders removing constitutional rights and being
rebuked by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court,
issued a warrant for the arrest of the Chief Justice. So much for
separation of power.
- Ordered the arrest of a member of congress from Ohio for criticizing
his unlawful intrusions on the Constitution.
More assaults on the separation of power, this time, The Congress.
- Closed over 300 newspapers in the North and held editors and publishers
in prison for criticizing his administration. Those who refused to
give up their First Amendment rights were left to rot in jail.
- Only one Union officer was tried for atrocities against civilians by
the Union army. He was found guilty and dishonorably discharged by the
army. Lincoln restored him to duty and promoted him to general. Real
compassion.
Space does not permit or we would cite
over two dozen racist and white supremacist remarks made in speeches by
Lincoln, before and during his presidency.
Let it be known that those of us who care
deeply about our Confederate ancestors and our Southern culture do not
now or ever wish to attack our fellow Americans,
wherever they live. We will not develop and circulate untrue myths
about fellow Americans. But, you can rest assured anyone who tries to distort
history for their own purposes will hear the truth from us.
