Atlanta Dimwits: Give Me a Break! by J. A. Davis
"If we can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them, they must
become happy." --Thomas Jefferson
"I am not a friend to a very energetic government. It is always oppressive. It places the governors indeed more at their ease, at the expense of the
people." --Thomas Jefferson
It seems like I'm wearing out both my fingers or my keyboard lately.
I didn't mean for that to happen. I need a break. Unfortunately, every day some new revelation develops in Atlanta that
interrupts my chance to rest my fingers and keyboard.
The latest disturbing news is that it now appears that Atlanta's World
Congress Center is going to show a loss this year. The economic stupidity in
Atlanta continues. Reviewing the reasons or excuses points up two or three stupid moves including losing the Home Builders convention over
the foolish idea of providing a subsidy or bribe for potenially lost exhibit space due to size limitations and making it up by adding a
surcharge to each attendee hotel room.
There is a consolation. The home-builders will have to pay a cancellation
penalty (for their cancelled convention contract) but it isn't going to help the red ink on the income statement for this year. The other consolation
is----temporarily----that Georgia taxpayers will not have to bail out the convention center immediately since it reportedly has a reserve of 8 million
dollars. Don't hold your breath though, at the rate they're going, it won't last long.
Georgia taxpayers need to be wary. We have a governor and legislature
that is very cordial to bailing out Atlanta with the money contributed by folks from 159 counties that have little or no
connection whatsoever with Atlanta and Atlanta's perpetual economic stupidity. It's the politically correct thing to do. They
somehow believe it translates into votes they've never gotten and have no hope in Hades of
getting. That doesn't bother the politicians though. It's only money. Your money.
If you haven't looked at the GHC website description of Georgia Vs Atlanta, please
take a moment or two to do so. You'll see this and several other Atlanta boondoggles you're either paying for or
expected to be paying shortly, described and documented in detail. We didn't include the $25-million-plus Sonny has added for Atlanta to secure and
help develop the NASCAR Hall of Fame Museum.
Too bad we at GHC aren't the chosen elite in the only place to qualify,
Atlanta. But forget it, our credentials don't qualify and if we did I doubt we would accept tax
dollars for our worthwhile cause. None of the others mentioned with their hands out should either.
Do you suppose with a holiday weekend that
the economic master minds in Atlanta could just leave it alone for a few days so I can get a break?
