North Carolina Beats Georgia...No, Not Basketball, But Money, Big Money, by J. A. Davis
Through the years we've watched North Carolina excel in basketball. Their
competitive spirit is taking on a new wrinkle, whipping Georgia in economic development.
Just as we hear wonderful progress at our port in Savannah, comes the news that it
now appears as though North Carolina has scored on a fast break and a lay up for what could be the biggest new port development in America.
See the story in The Raleigh News Observer.
For a preview, we're talking about billions of dollars, not millions. We're also seeing
big clients of our Savannah port like Walmart, Home Depot and Target in uniform and on the starting Tarheel team.
Read it yourself. Three different investment groups are pooling development capital. The state is buying a huge tract of land to
accommodate the various storage and millions of container loads.
Immediately I'm wondering..."WHY haven't we in Georgia heard about this?" Where is the news coverage? We get related
stories about VW and BMW and Mercedes who have ditched the Savannah area for what they consider better choices along the east coast corridor.
When will our losing steak end?
Maybe the time has come to evaluate just what Georgia is doing or not doing in the field of economic
development.
With the flight of manufacturing leaving Georgia for other sites, many
overseas, thanks to NAFTA and CAFTA, it seems some adjustments might be in order. [November 7th comes to mind!]
No wonder the balance of trade deficit has hit all time records and is growing worse by the month. When Alan
Greenspan and Warren Buffet urge remedial attention, we should pay attention.
There is no question the Southport Terminal in North Carolina would open
serious competition for not only Savannah, but other east coast ports.
While you're wondering why this news hasn't reached you in your Georgia
media, remember GHC tries to tell it like it is, as painful as that can be sometimes.
When you start getting shellacked in basketball, it is considered wise
to take a time out and regroup. How about it, Coach Perdue?
