GHC Website Direction, by J. A. Davis
Recently, the website of the Georgia Heritage Council resumed its
broadcast schedule after giving a dedicated staff of volunteers a well
deserved hiatus.
It may be a little sporadic as we reform our ranks and try to divide
the huge load of work to some new recruits who can help relieve some of our battle
weary veterans.
The occasion caused me to pause and reflect what this group of highly
skilled, busy people have accomplished in almost three years.
Call it tootin our own horn, or whatever
you may, these folks have accomplished a little history in the war of the web.
Starting from scratch we formed a team headed by our Webmaster, Steve
Scroggins, in Macon. He had a small nucleus of talent including Jim
Dean, Randy Phillips, Mike Crane, Norman Black and Woody Highsmith, all
from our GHC Steering Committee.
Several interesting events have occurred during the journey from then,
to now. We laugh about some and justifiably take pride in others.
We maintained a stance of being non-partisan politically, which meant
we went after some sacred cows in both major parties. Most significant is
the early work we did in exposing the connections between Ralph Reed
and Abramoff, which gradually gained momentum by the mainstream media resulting in an an
opponent in the twenty percentiles defeating Reed in the Republican
Primary. Copies of our X-Files showed up mysteriously, all over Georgia.
Steve stuck his neck out and took on one of America's best known talk
show hosts with some of our GHC satire via the X-Files. The result was over
30,000 visits in one day, and some good natured humor from both sides.
Speaking of humor, Creative Loafing, the
second largest circulated newspaper in Georgia, gave us, namely me, the distinction of being one of The Ten
LEAST Influential Georgians in 2006. I'm currently campaigning to hold that title from this most liberal
publication which we regularly enjoy duelling with.
Sometimes it comes down to a match of wit, humor and satire. Our
volunteers do well holding our own against their well paid pros.
Consider the match of a volunteer website
against a newspaper of over a hundred pages of trash, supplemented by
ads for some weird enterprises.
We continue to celebrate Black History Month with a series of
commentaries by Bill Vallante from The Slave Narratives.
Lew Regenstein contributes regularly. His work on Jews in the
Confederacy is monumental. Calvin Johnson does some of the neatest and universally
pleasing remembrances of our Southern heroes.
Occasionally we have shared the wisdom of Frank Conner. Our GHC
Chaplain, Dr. Paul Bellino, always prepares special messages for our viewers
accenting both religious occasions, as well as Southern
remembrances.
The tireless Billy Bearden regularly alerts us to Heritage violations
through his commentary on the GHC site. David Anderson has contributed regularly in
this area as well. Frank Gillespie has done some extraordinary work on the website.
Joan Hough has supplied beautiful work
on the threat to our Constitutional Republic resulting from the
secretive North American Union that is indeed a frightening reality.
There are others who have contributed. I'm sure my feeble 77 year old
memory may have left out some valuable names and generous souls. Forgive me.
GHC was in the lead almost three years ago exposing the problems
associated with illegal immigration. Some of our well researched
material has been picked up by other publications.
Our Liberty Lost series has been picked up on other links which has
helped us build a potential of more than a quarter million viewers via
links. Our site has been ranked as the number two political website in
Georgia, with more viewers than the two major parties combined, and
more viewers than any political columnist.
Around 3,000 folks have requested automatic notice of new articles
appearing on our website. This includes a number of journalists, broadcasters and
legislators.
Our archive titles by all of these talented
people remain on the website. They could
easily represent a curriculum of their own.
I invite those not familiar to take a cursory
cruise through these valuable essays (Commentary link). We have a special heading for
the archives of the X-Files, truly a phenomenon in contemporary journalism.
Take a look, and laugh with us. Our enemies seem to
have caught on to what the X-stands for.
GHC has been the active force, working with other heritage groups, in
promulgating legislation,
and we have been successful in some of our efforts. We have three
bills, two of which we wrote, with others helping, arranged
sponsorship of, in the current session. One, our Monument Act, if passed, could be
a model for legislation throughout the nation. We have secured help
from several interest areas, including veterans. Another creates into
law a permanent Confederate History and Heritage Month.
Our website has pinpointed legislators and state officials who do not
support our positions. In our existence, more than three dozen have
either been defeated or taken voluntary retirement. This is a tribute
to a number of heritage organizations who have worked in unison.
Most have links on our website, and GHC is linked on their sites.
When no one else would, GHC sued the
city of Augusta for removing historic flags
from the Riverwalk Flag Terrace. We won
part of the suit, and lost part. We still have the option of
developing a new case in the federal court system.
We now begin a new phase of the GHC website. It will change, as the
times and the issues change. We will be headed in the direction of
Constitutional Liberty, as defined by The Founders, and asserted by
our Confederate ancestors. Gradually, this will require some
facelifting on our site, without in any way diminishing the core values
we have stood for during our
existence.
For those on this list, we can use some volunteer help, no matter where
you are. We need someone to proof and edit articles. We need someone to help
post material on the website (a cyber guru). We always welcome new articles
that follow our general philosophy. Don't be bashful, if you can help
just a little, you will help relieve a overworked, but dedicated crew
that surprisingly is not all native Southern. We all share the common bond of the Constitutional
Republic.
Thanks for taking the time allow me to share this update. Pass the
word.
